Basement Wall Crack Repair - Seal and Fill Foundation Voids With Epoxy Or Polyurethane Injection

When a homeowner thinks about waterproofing the basement, the immediate concern is the high cost that often comes with it. Typically, a basement wall crack is something that the homeowner will easily notice, but puts off addressing until it becomes a serious problem. Thankfully, a low cost and highly efficient solution exists for the repair of both leaking and structural cracks in poured foundations - low-pressure injection. This process has become the most practical concrete crack repair solution for basement waterproofing and foundation repair contractors throughout the United States and Canada. However, to a homeowner unfamiliar with crack injection, such a simple and effective process may sound too good to be true.

The idea behind crack injection is to inject a liquid polymer (typically a two-part polyurethane or epoxy) into the crack. This process allows the material to travel throughout the void in the foundation, effectively filling the crack upon curing. Prior to injection, the crack is covered with a sealer (the best being an epoxy adhesive) to ensure that the injected material does not leak out the front of the crack.

The crack injection process has given homeowners an affordable solution to a problem that has the potential to be quite lingering when not properly addressed. For example, in years past, the most common remedy for a leaking crack was to install an interior drain tile system or to excavate around the home - both requiring a significant amount of time and labor, resulting in high expenses to the homeowner. Crack injection not only is more cost effective, it is also an effective repair solution because it actually addresses the void areas that makes up the crack, unlike drain tile which only collects the leaking water while allowing the crack to remain open.

Basement Wall Crack Repair - Seal and Fill Foundation Voids With Epoxy Or Polyurethane Injection

One of the most common questions has to do with the injection material - which is better suited for foundation crack repair? Both polyurethane and epoxy work well, but there are specific parameters in which one material would be preferred in place of the other.

Most cracks form as a result of shrinkage - typically, it is not a matter of if, but a matter of when a foundation crack will begin to leak water. When a crack does not appear to be structural related, I have always recommended polyurethane. As a result of contact with water, polyurethane has the ability to expand anywhere from six to 30 times its initial volume (expansion rate depends on the manufacturer and the type of polyurethane). The result of the expansion makes the injection process more user-friendly for the applicator - as the urethane expands, the foam is essentially filling any void areas inside the foundation. With epoxy, it generally takes significantly more material than urethane to repair the same crack because epoxy does not have the same expansion capability.

The use of epoxy is necessary for structural related cracks in the foundation. With the injection of epoxy, the repaired crack essentially becomes significantly stronger than the surrounding area - the added strength of epoxy becomes vital for such repairs. Pending the severity of the structural problem, additional reinforcement products may be necessary to ensure that further movement or settling does not create additional cracks around the repaired crack.

Before one commits to a foundation repair using crack injection, the applicator should consult with a credible supplier to ensure familiarity with appropriate curing times of materials and correct use of all components. For example, when purchasing a two-part component epoxy or polyurethane, its viscosity will determine which size mixing nozzle will best accommodate the injection of material. The capability of the materials reacting properly is critical - does the supplier guarantee that materials meet manufacturer specifications? A supplier (either a distributor or a manufacturer) should be openly available and honest to ensure that the contractor is best serving his customers.

Crack injection has been used by waterproofing and foundation repair professionals for more than 20 years. It has proved to be a highly efficient and low cost solution for homeowners, while providing contractors a viable business endeavor. Not all things in life are too good to be true.

Best Foundation For Oily Acne Prone Skin - And Did I Mention Cheap Too?

It ran in my family that we have oily skin, so it's a genetic thing and I cannot do much to change it. I have tried a lot of methods to make my skin less shiny, from the home remedies like using apple cider as a toner to medical method like taking birth control pills. Those methods did make my skin look a bit less oily and shiny but the excess oil was still there and it always gave me a dirty feeling and I felt very unconfident sometimes. My skin was also very prone to acne and even though I tried a lot of over-the-counter products, my skin only improved for a short period of time and then those red and inflamed spots appeared again like mushrooms. That's why I have been very careful with choosing makeup, especially foundations. I always buy those that claim to be "oil free" and normally opt for medium to full coverage. I did find some good foundations which do not break me out and provide a medium and pleasant coverage. As I am saving up for going back to university again, I cannot afford all the expensive and high-end brands like Estee Launder, Shiseido, Lancome so I only go for over-the-counter or medium priced products. Below are the list of the best foundations for oily acne prone skin to me:

Bourjois Happy Light Foundation: Don't be fooled by the word "light" in the name, it's actually a medium coverage foundation. This Bourjois foundation in fact covers all of my blemishes. I have mild acne with some tiny red spots on my forehead (the most oily place) and this foundation covers up everything! I don't even have to use any concealer! Many people claim that this foundation is oily and can only be used on dry skin girls. I totally disagree. It feels nicely on my skin and is very easy to apply and even though my skin looks a bit shiny after around 5 hours, it is still great compared to many other high-end products. I cannot find it in any local store so normally I search and buy it off from eBay or from Strawberrynet.

Everyday Minerals: this is my second holy grail! This is a mineral powder foundation and I normally buy it through their official website. The price is a lot cheaper compared to Bare Minerals. I used before and the coverage is a lot better too. It has never broken me out and always gives me a velvet and smooth finished coverage. I look like I don't wear any makeup at all using this foundation. However with this foundation, I still have to use some concealer on any bigger and noticeable spot.

Best Foundation For Oily Acne Prone Skin - And Did I Mention Cheap Too?

Bourjois 10-hours sleep foundation: I love this foundation. I always use it when I don't need to look flawless. This is more of a tinted moisturizer but still provides quite good coverage. It is very liquid like and easy to spread. However, I don't recommend it if you live in a very hot and humid area as it can make you look a bit oily after some hours. To make up for that, it gives a very natural coverage and never breaks me out! I normally don't use any moisturizer, except when the weather is really dry. I don't use primers also as I had bad experience with it (most of them broke me out). I usually only wear these foundations alone, and settle with Rimmel Stay Matte Powder (I love this pressed powder so much, it doesn't break me out, controls the oil extremely well and at , it's a steal!).

So above are the best foundations for an oily acne prone skin gal like me. For anyone with mild to medium acne, the above foundations will cover almost everything. But if you need heavier coverage, maybe you need some more concealer or other kinds of foundation. However, I wouldn't recommend heavy coverage foundations at all, because they clog your pores a lot more and even result in cystic acne. I had those before and I knew they were such a pain! Now I only have very mild acne after following a very unique method To find out what method I have been using to keep my skin clear and learn valuable makeup tips, please visit my FREE acne-prone skin makeup guide

Strengthening Your Foundation - Why Weak Feet May Be Your Downfall

If a tree is not firmly rooted to the ground, a strong wind will blow it over. A fence with poorly set posts is flattened easily by a strong dog. And weak feet will lead to your defeat.

Your feet are more than just a place to store your socks, they're your connection to the ground. Strong and healthy feet make you quick, powerful, and nimble. Weak and dysfunctional feet make you slow, achy, and wobbly - and really bad at yoga. When it comes to your entire body, your feet set the tone for performance.

Most of us don't know much about our feet, and most of us don't want to. And that's ok. With that in mind, I'm going to be really light on the details. Ready?

Strengthening Your Foundation - Why Weak Feet May Be Your Downfall

There are over 20 muscles in your feet. On top of that, about 10 muscles in your shins attach to your feet, bringing the total to more than 30. These muscles' job descriptions include wiggling your toes, flapping your feet, pushing off from the ground, absorbing shock, and supporting your arch. Yes, there are muscles that support your arch.

The Arch: That's where I'm going in this Special Edition of the Special Report. Your arches are supported by ligaments and muscles in your feet and shins. Or at least they should be.

Somehow, we've all been led to believe that our shoes should support our arches. This is true for long distance running. But it's not true the rest of the time. By relying too much on high-tech shoes, and shoving things like orthotics in there, we've cheated our feet. That's right, we're a nation of feet-cheaters. The high tech "solutions" to foot problems actually create weak feet that cry out constantly for support.

Here's a surprising fact: The less industrialized nations of the world have citizens with far fewer foot problems. Why? Because they actually use all of the muscles in their feet. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not indicting capitalism or the Industrial Revolution. I love America, love my TV, my internet, my refrigerator, my indoor plumbing, and cholera-free water supply. I also, however, think that the shoe industry is kind of a giant sham.

Try a little experiment, if you wouldn't mind. Take off your shoes and go stand in front to the mirror. Now, lift your left leg up and watch your right foot on the ground. What happens? For most of you, after a few seconds, the arch will flatten out. This is usually followed by shifting your right hip to try to correct your balance. Then the hand flailing begins. Soon, you must put your left foot back down to regain your balance. It all started in the feet.

There are two muscles, the Tibialis Anterior (on the shin) and the Tibialis Posterior (deep in the calf) that should, if they're strong, support your arch. You also have muscles in your feet that help. When they are weak, as they usually are, your balance is bad. Dancers and gymnasts usually have very strong feet, and therefore very good balance.

Try the one-foot test again. This time, make an effort to hold your arch up while you're on one foot. (Imagine that your favorite pet bug is walking under your arch and if you let it flatten out, the bug gets squished.)

What happened? You were more stable, took longer to lose your balance, and felt a strange muscle burn deep in your arch and calf. You're surprised. You've just learned something that most people never figure out: you shouldn't rely only on shoes to support your feet.

You may be shocked. You do calf raises at the gym. Shouldn't that strengthen the "arch support" muscles? Not if you use shoes and not if you use machines. (Warning: Most gyms will make you keep your shoes on, which is a good thing given how filthy their floors usually are).

Once again, high-tech shoes provide too much support to let you challenge your arch muscles. And most machines, calf machines in particular, do all the balancing for you. The result: a nation of feet-cheaters riddled with plantar fasciitis, chronic ankle sprains, knee problems, back pain, calf pain, etc..

It doesn't have to be that way.

The solution: Get rid of the shoes and get away from the machines (at least a few times each week). You can strengthen your feet with the following bodyweight-only exercises in the clean comfort of your own home. Practice these exercises three times a week and you'll be amazed at how much your balance improves and how much stronger your feet feel. You'll notice the difference in your sports of choice. And, you'll probably have fun.

First, some general rules: Make sure you have lots of space around you in case you fall. Move slowly and come to a full stop at the top and bottom of each rep. Start with 1 set of 3-12 reps of each exercise. If they're all too easy, hold a weight. Apply the core contraction skills I taught you a few newsletters ago. You'll be surprised how this helps your balance. And of course, always clear anything you ever do physically with your doctor.

Standing calf raises, 2 legs

Just like the machine version, but harder. Slowly raise all the way to your toes, and hold for a count of 5. It's harder than you think. Yes, you may do this off the end of a step, just don't bounce. Try the 1-leg version, too.

Back lunge

Lunge backward slowly and try to maintain your balance with the planted leg. Then slowly come back up. Remember, you're working the foot, not just the quad.

One legged squats (Advanced)

This is a tough one. Standing on one leg, bend the knee and fold at the hip to squat down. Go until you reach the floor with your hands, but do not let the 'flying foot' touch down. Remember to tighten the core. Then, come back up. (You may have to tap your other foot for balance at first)

Inevitably, you'll want to know what kind of shoes you should be wearing. If you're a runner, get running shoes you like. You'll want some support there, and you'll want to consult a running pro. For working out, go low-tech. This is the time to challenge your arches. I prefer either the Converse Chuck Taylors, or Adidas Stan Smiths.

Chuck Taylors are available in many styles, high and low, for both men and women. They even come in pink. They run a whopping . Remember shoes? I don't either. Wresting shoes are good, too. But they look kind of strange. Unless you're a wrestler.

And of course, it goes without saying that years of feet-cheating may leave you with dysfunctional, scar tissue clogged muscles. This will affect how your muscles work and how they feel. Active Release Technique is still the one and only technique that actually breaks up scar tissue.

Make Up Foundations

What foundation do you recommend to your patients? Which brand and what to look for when looking for right make up foundation?

There are so many different products and colors of foundation and so many different colors and types of skin. Even if there was a brand you thought was good, it wouldn't work to or everyone. That is one reason why many dermatologists don't recommend any company's foundation. But it's mainly because the don't want to promote something I don't think is a good thing for the health of your complexion in the first place. Women want to or have to wear foundation, but it's very hard to have a universal product to recommend.

If you have to wear foundation, try a water-based product vs. an oil-based foundation. The oil-based product will stick inside the pores more than a water-based type. Many times when patient comes in for a facial with an oilier foundation on her face, it will take me more than the normal two cleansings to get it all off. Sometimes I see small bits of foundation sitting in the pores after cleansing and even exfoliating during the course of a facial, which indicates she is probably not getting her skin clean at home.

Make Up Foundations

Dermatologist should always let the client know if she isn't doing enough to get her skin clean-namely getting all the makeup off. Cleaning at least twice at night is in order if you wear makeup. The first cleanse is to get the makeup off; the second cleanse is to get your skin clean. Without doing at least two cleansings, you are increasing your chances of getting clogged pores-at the very least.

Instant Saving Tip, How and Why to Close Foundation Vents in the Winter

Foundation vents have a direct role in influencing the energy efficiency of your home. Open in summer and closed in winter, that's the way it should be to help conserve power, control your power bill, and support a healthy underfloor environment.

A foundation vent is a little window into an unknown world. A world that is part Hercules, because the structures within hold up a small personal planet - a world that is part zoo, because of the all the little crawling creatures that reside there that we don't even want to know about - a world that is part warehouse, because of all the mechanical, electrical, insulation, and plumbing structures that we simply can not do without. Take care of your underfloor space and it will take care of you.

Foundation vents are the subject of this instant savings tip. If you live in a cooler climate and live in a house with a crawl space, open the foundation vents during the warm summer months to add ventilation through the underfloor space and close the foundation vents in cooler winter months to stop the cool air from blowing through and cooling the floor and the house.

Instant Saving Tip, How and Why to Close Foundation Vents in the Winter

The heating system will not have to work as hard if it doesn't have to fight a cold floor. Keeping the vents closed in winter helps keep the floor, the heating ducts and the water pipes a little warmer and, in the case of the water lines, a little less likely to freeze.

The size and number of foundations vents, especially in newer homes, have been carefully calculated to provide adequate ventilation. The building codes describe the net free opening requirements for an underfloor area based on floor space and air volume. Adequate ventilation keeps the space dry and reduces the growth of mold, mildew, and the ever popular, dry rot.

Most foundation vents consist of three parts that are connected together into one unit.

1. A plastic rectangle, open from side to side, that fits into the concrete foundation stem wall.

2. Small mesh metal screen that connects within the center of the vent to restrict the opening to just air passage and not rodent passage. ( cats are rodents )

3. Plastic flappers that are attached and hinged on one edge that can be pulled down to uncover the vent opening and allow air passage, or raised up to cover the opening and restrict the passage of air.

Closing the foundation vents, getting ready for cooler weather and saving energy.

1. Drop by your favorite hardware store and pick up some styrofoam foundation vent covers. Cost you about .00 per vent. In the fall, stores will have sales on vent covers so keep looking.

2. Count your cat population. If one or more of the metal screens has been broken or removed, be sure the felines are not using your underfloor space as a hideout. Cats, heating ducts, and insulation do not go together very well. Cats will destroy insulation and heating ducts as they try to get at the warmer air within.

3. Grab a small hand brush or paint brush to clean out the vent openings. Leaves, twigs, dirt and spiders have to go so the vent flapper will close completely. The vent will have some sort of small clip built into the vent body to hold the flapper closed. Don't worry if the clip no longer works and the flappers just fall open. That's one advantage of using the styrofoam vent covers, they hold the plastic flappers closed.

4. Take the styeofoam covers and with a utility knife, carefully trim the covers, as needed, to fit snuggly in the vent opening. A good snug fit will seal the opening - hold the plastic flapper covers shut, and keep the styrofoam covers in place when the wind blows. It's a little unhandy to find the pipes under the house are frozen and the wind has deposited your styrofoam vent covers all over the neighborhood.

With the vent covers closed, the underfloor space is protected from the cool and windy outdoor environment. The underfloor area is allowed to warm up, because of the warm heating ducts and warm water pipes that are in the space. The floor will be warmer, the thermostat can be turned down a degree or two and the furnace does not have to work so hard to warm the house. Power conservation has been awarded with a more comfortable and energy efficient home.

When spring arrives and the weather warms up, remove the styrofoam vent covers and open the vent flaps so air can pass through the crawl space once again. Store the styrofoam covers in the garage where they will be ready to be used again next fall.

Hope this article was interesting and helpful, come back to Detect Energy for more instant saving tips, but hurry, I won't leave the light on for you...

Stone Foundation Repair - What to Do?

Owning an historic property with an old stone foundation can be an interesting experience. Those with a strong will and a sound pocketbook can be true caretakers of a piece of history. The foundation of that history is the simple, bold and strong field stone foundation wall.

Older buildings with a stone foundation will generally have the original stone facing visible on the exterior and interior of the building. However it was common to apply a coating of plaster to the interior foundation wall in the basement area, as a means of waterproofing so the stone may not be visible from inside of the building.

Most of the original plaster would have worn off by today but if you are lucky, you just may run across an old stone foundation still in pristine condition but this would be the exception.

Stone Foundation Repair - What to Do?

Usually after 30 - 50 years the foundation would have shifted cause cracks to appear in the foundation wall and it wasn't uncommon to apply a second to the foundation with a masonry cement stucco. If the second layer is cement stucco than it would indicate that the second coating must have been applied after the early 1900's, when mass produced cement stucco became available.

Regardless if plaster or stucco was applied to the walls, they will look lumpy as the individual stones shapes will show beneath the plaster or stucco.

What to look for -A lot of these older stone foundations were never well maintained and can challenge a building owner with problems ranging from water leakage, mortar turning into sand, loose stones and bulging walls. Anything beyond these few maintenance problems could be considered 'in failure' and may need an engineer's inspection.

Stone foundation walls that leak - It wasn't uncommon for these old stone foundation walls to leak. When they were originally constructed a hole was simply dug to the dimensions of the building and a trench dug where the walls were to be placed. Large field stones would be placed in the trench and became the bed stones of the foundation wall.

Drain tile were not in use around the foundations of older building so static pressure would have been a problem from the beginning depending or the soil type and topography. A high quality builder would have trenched to daylight from the low corner of the building site to take water away from the foundation, if the site permitted. The trench would be partially filled with rubble stones before covering but this simply drainage technique would be an exception and not the rule.

Most of the older homes were constructed high off the ground to keep moisture to a minimum. The basement area for these homes where never intended to be used as living space so a little moisture would have been common and of no concern.

Stone foundation wall problems - Decades of water infiltration will cause deterioration to the stone foundation walls. The result can be bulged walls from excessive static pressure or settlement of the foundation, deteriorated mortar joints from excessive moister or loose stones and missing mortar joints from simple aging and movement.

Bulged walls - This problem presents the biggest hurdle for a building owner depending on the degree and severity of the bulging problem and the location within the foundation wall. Generally though, a portion of the foundation wall can be removed and rebuilt but proper shoring must be in place to support the building load before you proceed. This should not be out of the range of an experienced mason contractor and you should seek their advice.

Loose stones and missing mortar - These items are simple to remedy. Loose stones should be taken out and re-set with fresh mortar. Care should be taken not to undermine any critical support areas within the foundation. If you suspect an area of loose stone is carrying a beam load or other loads then consult a professional for advice.

Holes and missing joints can be filled with mortar or tuck-pointed to help tighten the foundation walls. Any brand of masons mix available at the local box store should be adequate.

After you have completed the repairs mentioned above you may wish to apply another layer of cement stucco. This will help to smooth out imperfections, close small holes, 'stiffen' the walls surface and hopefully provide some protection against water leaks.

Check the foundation annually and make any necessary repairs immediately. By taking immediate action and implementing the repairs recommended above you will be one step closer to keeping that old, stone foundation in shape.

How to Write Your First Ebook

Writing your first ebook may seem like a daunting task. But like many projects, it won't seem so bad when it's broken down into manageable chunks. Not all projects are successful, so don't be too disappointed if your first ebook isn't a best seller. Whatever the outcome of your first ebook, you can at least say 'You did it'.

Like many things in life, what often seems impossible can be attained with the right attitude and the right equipment. It could be a marathon run, climbing a mountain or finding parking space at the supermarket.

If you want to play golf, you will need clubs, balls and some practice. There's no guarantee you will become another Tiger Woods but you will become a golfer.

How to Write Your First Ebook

If you want to write an ebook, you will need a computer, software and some directions. Assuming you have a computer and software or access to them, here are some directions.

Establish Your Reasons

Your reasons for wanting to write an ebook will have a major impact on your success. It may be for financial gain, promoting a business, advancing your career, education, self satisfaction or something entirely different. Whatever your reasons, write them down. It will help to motivate you if the going gets tough.

Choose Your Subject

There are countless subjects that you can write about. It's wise to choose something you have an interest in or knowledge of. It is worthwhile spending time on this. The more you know about your subject, the easier it will be to write about.

Choose Your Title

After you've chosen your subject, you'll need a title for the ebook. It's worth writing down a few different ones before deciding on the one you'll use. This will help to keep your focus and may give you some other ideas. The title should give a clear indication of the content in your book. A catchy title may help to sell it, but remember to balance this with clarity to keep it in context. I've written down two examples. Feel free to use them if you have a sense of humor.

A Clubbers Paradise - Golfing in Ibiza

20 Minutes Late - The Future of Trains

Choose Your Audience

The subject and style of your writing will determine your audience. Decide who your desired audience will be. Age, gender, culture, social background and education are factors you may want to consider. What you write should be targeted at your desired audience.

Write Your Thesis Statement

Although it's possible to write your ebook without a 'thesis statement', it is not recommended. If you are unfamiliar with this term, there are many sources available that will provide you with all the details you need. Unfortunately, there are some differences of opinion that may lead to confusion.

The 'thesis statement' deserves a separate article of its own but for now I have written a general definition of a thesis statement for ebooks. This may leave the door open for criticism but is a small price to pay if it removes some of the confusion. More importantly, it will give you a base on which to start. Only use it as a guideline. If you want a more specific definition, Google is a good place to start your search.

A thesis statement is a sentence or two written to clearly show the reason(s) for your ebook and what you expect to write about.

Although I have referred to this as a general definition, keep in mind that your actual statement should be as specific as possible.

Think of it as the foundation for your ebook. It should contain the following:

1) Your subject

2) Your opinion on the subject

3) A supporting reason for your opinion

4) The significance of 1), 2) and 3)

Create Your Document

Now that you have the foundation, you can begin writing.
A standard application like MS Word is a good choice.
While you are writing your document you can revise your thesis statement at any time up until it is published. This provides a good degree of flexibility.

Choose the format and layout of your document, including chapters, headings and introductions. Dependent on your subject, you may wish to add photographs, anecdotes or testimonials that keep the reader's attention.

Since an ebook is generally read from a screen, you may want to break up the text more than in a printed book. Experiment with a few different fonts and look at other ebooks for ideas you can use. Spell check and save your document regularly. MS Word has an auto recovery feature. This is useful if you don't save the document on a regular basis and later experience a system crash. Always backup your document. As a precaution you should also keep a copy on another media such as CD.

Choose Your eBook Format

This is a personal choice. You may decide to create an executable (.exe) file or a Portable Document Format (.pdf) file. By no means an exhaustive list, here are some points to consider before you choose.

EXE files are compiled using an ebook compiler

EXE files may offer features that are not available with PDFs

Foundation Repair

The principal function of a foundation of a home is to transfer the weight of a structure to its underlying soil and rocks. One of the factors that bring about the need for foundation repairs is improper foundation settling. Foundation settlement can devalue structures and also render them unsafe. Building on expansive clay, compressive or improperly contracted fill soils and improper maintenance in and around foundations are some of the major reasons of improper foundation settling. Another reason for improper foundation settlement is undetected or unsuspected air pockets in the ground below the area of construction. These may cave in and cause the integrity of the foundation to be compromised.

General symptoms of a structure needing foundation repairs are bulging or cracked walls and doors that don't close properly. Building on expansive soils is the main culprit for foundation settlement. When only one part of the foundation either settles or heaves, cracks are formed in the foundation. The exterior warning signs of improper floor settling are rotation of walls, displaced moldings, cracked bricks and foundation and separation around doors and windows from the walls. Interior warning signs of improper floor settling are cracks on the floor, sheet rock and misalignment in doors and windows.

There are many ways of doing foundation repair. Cement, stone, steel or wood were used extensively in past techniques. They would be forced into the ground in a bid to salvage the strength of these foundations. However, this type of repair work has been known to be futile. Two of the most successful ways of foundation repairs are slab jacking and the Piering method. Piering is also known as hydraulic jacking.

Foundation Repair

Slab jacking is the process of adding grout beneath a slab or beam. This produces a lifting force and restores the said beam or slab to almost its original elevation and adds to its strength. Care should be taken that the amount of sand should be perfect while adding grout.

During Piering, steel posts are driven through unstable soil. Hydraulic jacks are used to stabilize concrete slabs which are weakened due to the changes taking place in the underlying soil. Steel beams are used in the Piering method because concrete has great compressive strength. Though Piers are able to transfer huge downward loads without the help of reinforcing steel, steel is used in the piers for prevention of the pier from being pulled apart or sheared by forces of the expansive soils. The repairs normally take 21 to 30 days, however this time frame can vary depending on soil conditions and weather delays.

Limestone Gravel is Good For More Than Just Driveways

Limestone is a versatile aggregate material that can be used for many different projects, but the average homeowner is probably most familiar with its use as filler for driveways. The small white gravel stones are useful for traction in driveways and parking lots, but they are also helpful in drainage and back fill projects, as well.

Especially where basement waterproofing and drain repair jobs are concerned, limestone gravel is an excellent material for use in filling excavated holes and trenches. Limestone has excellent drainage properties, which means that water can easily filter through the material. When footer drains are replaced around the foundation of a home, back filling with limestone gravel allows rainwater to filter down to the perforated pipes and flow away from the home.

Limestone is generally harvested from quarries and crushed to different sizes depending upon needs. In addition to the most common smaller size of gravel, larger pieces are also available for other construction projects. And limestone screenings, which are a fine, powder-like material used for things like providing stability between patio stones, are another commonly used limestone aggregate material.

Limestone Gravel is Good For More Than Just Driveways

If you are interested in using an aggregate material to fill in your driveway, then gravel might not be your best choice. Slag, another material that is similar to limestone, is less expensive and usually works just as well in driveways. Slag is not a stone, however, but rather a byproduct of steel production that is lighter and cheaper to purchase.

Most landscaping material providers will have the ability to offer you both slag and limestone gravel. Be sure to talk to a professional about what you need the material for, how much area you need to cover, and whether you should purchase slag or limestone.

Pink Ribbon Merchandise by the Komen Foundation

The pink ribbon campaign is a unifying bond between consumers and manufactures of some of the most popular products in stores for the support of the Susan G, Komen foundation for the cure. The campaign places the widely recognized pink ribbon logo on the labels, tags and stickers of many products sold in the United States and other countries. The ribbon helps to raise consumer consciousness about the issue of breast cancer while at the same providing people an easy way to help. When bought, pink ribbon merchandise allows the manufacturer or distributor to make a small donation - a portion of the proceeds of the sale - to the foundation.

The purpose behind the Komen foundation is to increase awareness and ensure that those who have lost their battles are remembered and that their sacrifice was not in vain, and that those who have survived are able to live in dignity and respect. Most importantly the foundation works to help those who are in the process of fighting breast cancer by giving them support and resources as well as funding for research.

Pink ribbon merchandise is a main form of funding for the foundation. The license of the pink ribbon logo to use on the labels and tags of items sold allows the foundation to not only increase its fund raising capacity but to also keep the idea of the struggle alive in consumers' minds on a regular basis. The manufacturers who place the logo on their products.

Pink Ribbon Merchandise by the Komen Foundation

Most of the items that are licenses as pink ribbon items are things that are of use or interest to women. These items include food products, health and beauty items and women's wear. Of course this is not the rule, in fact in recent years the campaign has striven to add more men centered items to the list or products in an effort to increase awareness and support among males about an issue which affect the women whom they care about in their lives.

Pink ribbon products are selected not only for their popularity but also for the quality of the merchandise. The foundation tries hard to make sure that the items which are licensed and the companies that are a part of the campaign are of the highest caliber. There are very specific guidelines that must be met in order to have the logo places on a product.

The proceeds from pink ribbon merchandise sales help support the Komen foundation and the efforts that they make toward finding a cure for this condition which affects millions of women worldwide and hundreds of millions more who care about those women. The funding helps to provide research opportunities, support for patient and survivors, memorials for those who have been lost and rally's & events to raise awareness and garner more support.

The next time that you see an item in the store which bears the pink ribbon logo, take a moment to think about the work being done by the Komen foundation. Look at the product and if it will meet your needs as well as a similar product then please consider purchasing the pink ribbon merchandise. The proceeds help to benefit a worthy and world changing cause. Together we can all do our part, together we can stop the pain and suffering, together we can end the deaths, and together we can find the cure.
