Team Foundation Server Tutorial For New Users

Team Foundation Server is a breakthrough in collaborative software design and management. This Server tutorial will give new users an idea of the power and scope of TFS. Software development with Team Foundation is quite different from software development in Visual Studio. A team project is the hub for sharing all of the team activities which are necessary in order to create a specific software product or technology. The New Team Project Wizard is able to create a number of important components for the new project. In the first place it creates a web site for the project which contains several document templates and also predefined reports. The Wizard also creates a database of work items which enable tracking all work on the project. The Wizard also installs a template which determines rules, security groups, policies, and queries. It also creates a source code branch to enable version control, depending upon system requirements.

Once you have connected to the TFS you can create a new project by clicking New Team Project on the File menu, which brings up the Wizard. Type the name of the project in the What is the name of the team project box, and then click Next. On the page to Select a Process Template, select from the Which process template drop down list, and click Next. On the page to specify the Setting for the Project Portal, retain the default title and type the name in the box for What is the description? This project portal is the SharePoint website which stores team project documents. The Team project portal web site address box displays the project portal address. Click Next, and on the page to Specify Source Control Settings, retain the default values and click Next. On the page to Confirm Team Project Settings, click Finish. The New Team Project Wizard automatically creates the new team project!

Next click close on the Team Project Created page. The Wizard opens the overview page which displays the team project hierarchy nodes. The most important nodes are the Work Items node, which gives you the capability of adding work items and creating viewing queries in the work item database. The Documents node, which gives you access to all documents such as functional specifications, process guidance, and risk assessment which are filed on the project portal. The Reports node, which gives you access to all team reports. The Builds node, which gives you access to the team project builds. And the Source Control node, which gives you access to the source control management

After you have created a team project you must then configure individual settings such as permissions, groups, build configurations, areas and iterations, and source control. Settings can be modified from the Team Explorer. It's that simple! For more information on Microsoft TFS training, see the TFS in Action pdf file.
